Polygraph Services: How and Why It is Considered in the Workplace

Remaining truthful can be incredibly beneficial in practically any situation, for both yourself as well as for those around you. Without a clear sense of honesty being present within a group of people, the downfall of their relationships and interactions between one another is sure to make its way to light. This is the exact reason why many businesses, small start-ups and large corporations alike, tend to seek out and implore the use of polygraph services within the workplace. Within only a few minutes of reading, you too could begin to understand the countless benefits that are awarded to those who place honesty in the workplace above all else!

How Polygraph Services Were First Introduced in their Earlier Years

Since the very beginning of civilization and communication as a whole, it has remained vitally important to the wellbeing of the tribe that each individual should sustain a certain level of honesty with everyone else. Without this honesty, the tribe would be left at risk of any number of dangers and weaknesses, such as food and supply shortages, just for starters. This, among many other reasons, is why it has become engrained within us as humans to know if someone is being deceitful or not, not just out of interest’s sake, but for the sake of our survival and wellbeing.

While there are many people who seem to have an uncanny ability to tell if someone is lying or not, this would not be an acceptable way to conduct lie detection services in our current day. This, however, was the only way in which humans were able to conduct any form of investigation once enough evidence has been provided through costly and time-consuming investigations. Those carrying out these investigations would then need to ask any and all potential suspects a number of questions, then being left to distinguish between the honest and dishonest through their words and general mannerisms at face value.

This, unfortunately, was standard procedure amongst many investigations until the very end of the 19th century, when the pioneering criminologist, physician, and psychiatrist by the name of Cesare Lombroso made a number of modifications to an existing machine called a hydrosphygmograph. This machine was first used to record how much blood is forced via each palpitation when connected to any one of the patient’s limbs. With Lombroso’s modifications, however, this machine gained the ability to measure and record any physiological changes that would occur within the suspect’s pulse rate and blood pressure whenever the interrogation was conducted. This device in itself would go on to inspire the creation of the cardiosphygmograph, one of the individual components found within modern lie detector machines used during such services.

While Cesare Lombroso was technically not the true inventor of this machine, he has become recognized as the first person to have used the machine as a means to uncover any dishonesty within an individual to great success, even being invited to work on, and then go on to solve, several criminal investigations. This proved to the world that lie detector tests were, and remain to be, of great value to the general population when used appropriately.

From that point up until 1939, when the first prototype of the modern-day polygraph machine was unveiled, many different prototypes and machines were created and iterated upon, all providing their own levels of success. Created by Leonarde Keeler, the early versions of the modern-day lie detector machine came as a breakthrough in technology, science, as well as criminal investigations, proving once again to the world that these lie detector services were not just a gimmick and could provide long-lasting benefits to the police force when used in its intended method. From this up until 1992, the year in which polygraph services first entered the computer age, Keeller’s machine would undergo countless improvements, changes, and iterations, both done by himself as well as those looking to follow in his footsteps.

The digital introduction of these lie detector services was quickly followed up by a software program by the name of PolyScore in 1993. This program, developed by John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory statisticians Dr. Dale E. Olsen and John C. Harris, was able to use a mathematical algorithm, which was needed to be highly sophisticated for its time, to read and record the polygraph data provided in order to estimate the probability behind whether the subject was remaining truthful or not.

Through this software receiving a number of improvements and additional testing phases over the following years, its algorithm would go on to achieve and even exceed an accuracy rate of 98% when quantifying, analysing, and evaluating the data that was collected from polygraph services that were conducted on real-world criminal cases.

How are Modernized Lie Detector Services Conducted in the Current Day?

When services such as this are hired, whether in the workplace or at home, most of the machines being used all tend to work in largely the same way, with the only major differences being the structure and layout of each individual machine. These machines are able to analyse multiple signals, known as “polys” and record them onto a strip of moving paper, known as the “graph”.

As the purpose of these tests is to analyse and record the subject’s breathing and pulse rate, blood pressure as well as their perspiration, between 4 and 6 different sensors are placed across the person’s body, ranging from their arms, face, and chest, but will also be able to pick up on movement occurring in the legs too.

Two rubber tubes, known as pneumographs, are then also filled with air and placed around the subject’s abdomen and chest. This is so that when breathing, the subject’s chest and abdominal muscles expand, which displaces the air found in the rubber tubes. These pneumographs, by using transducers, can then convert this air into electrical signals that would then be read as data off of a nearby computer screen. A blood pressure cuff is also used in order to measure the subject’s heart rate and blood pressure.

Once all of these sensors have been placed in their correct positions and the lie detector machine is up and running during the beginning stages of these polygraph services, a quick series of short questions would first be asked to the subject.

These questions would not relate to the objective of the test, as they are merely asked as a means to record and establish normalized signals within the subject. From this point when the real questions are brought forward, any deviations from these normalized signals would be able to indicate whether or not someone is being truthful. The examiner of the polygraph tests can then look at the graphs, during or after the procedure, in order to tell if any significant changes have been detected within the subject’s vital signs when a question is brought up and answered.

Changes that would be deemed as “significant” are often seen as an increase in the subject’s heart rate, blood pressure, and perspiration, which would be an indication of dishonesty. A well-trained and highly skilled polygraph examiner is able to use the knowledge that they’ve grown over their many years on the job to detect whether a person is lying or not with an often impressively high degree of accuracy, all before even looking at the data that has been recorded during their lie detector services.

While this skill can prove to be immensely useful during an investigation, it should not be relied upon entirely during the course of the examination, but rather used alongside the lie detector machine being used in order to attain the very best results possible. This is purely due to the fact that in spite of how skilled an individual may be, they are still human and can be prone to mistakes, even if only on the rarest of occasions.

Why Would Your Company Want to Hire Such Polygraph Services?

When running any form of business that provides a stable working environment to a large number of employees, many of whom are making contact with clients through phone calls, emails, and business meetings, it is endlessly vital that honesty is kept in mind at all times in order for the ship to sail smoothly. When an employee provides another employee or a client with incorrect information, whether knowingly or unknowingly, it can cause major problems that can then also lead to a chain reaction if not dealt with soon enough. Not only would the dishonest employee experience a loss of respect and trust, but the company that hired them would be subject to a very similar experience, if not worse.

This is why companies such as Polygraph Truths aim to provide high-quality and widely trusted polygraph services to small and large businesses located throughout the country. Polygraph Truths, is a locally run business that is able to provide its large selection of highly esteemed polygraph services in Polokwane, Cape Town, Durban as well as Johannesburg too. These services are known specifically as:

  • Pre-Employment Screenings
  • Periodic Screenings
